Catholic King's University College Regrets Pro-Life Movie Screening
Updated: Mar 11, 2022
King’s University College, a Catholic college located in Ontario, Canada, has been making headlines in recent days– for hosting an event to view the popular pro-life film Unplanned.
After the pro-life event, 44 professors at King’s University College wrote an open letter to the principal of the university, claiming that the school community was expressing “furor and fear” as a result of the movie being shown. “The public endorsement of an anti-abortion stance at King’s University College by the Director of Campus Ministry is of great concern to the viability of our institution as we work to maintain excellent students, staff, and faculty,” the letter stated.
In addition, the professors demanded that the principal issue a statement saying the pro-life messages in Unplanned do not align with the school’s commitment to critical and difficult debate.
The principal responded to the letter, stating “The presentation of the film and the belief of life beginning at conception is the stance of Campus Ministry and not of King’s as a whole… King’s does not have a position on abortion.” It’s disappointing that even religious institutions are being berated from within for their pro-life views. Is it really a surprise that the Department of Campus Ministry expresses pro-life values, given that the Catholic Church has been vehemently opposed to abortion for 2000 years?
The professors’ position on open debate is an extremely hypocritical one. In order to further debate at their school, the professors want to demand a removal of any pro-life material. If the professors were truly interested in furthering debate, they would encourage students to watch pro-life and pro-choice material and then discuss the abortion issue, having heard all perspectives. Professors are likely wary to encourage students to watch pro-life material, because they know the facts are on the side of the pro-life movement.
What this issue really boils down to is a group of leftist professors who are trying to instill fear in pro-life students who rightfully want to be a voice for the voiceless, and a principal that caved to their demands. These educational elites are not interested in debate– they simply want to force their views on others, and silence anyone who dares to disagree.
